Huginn and Muninn are the two ravens that sit on Odin’s shoulders — his messengers and spies. Every day they fly through the whole of creation, gathering information and news, and at the end of the day return to the Allfather to whisper in his ears what they have seen and heard.
Huginn means “thought” and Muninn means “memory”. Some say the two ravens are part of Odin himself: his wisdom and his mind in bird form.
Odin constantly worries about them when they are out on his business, and dreads the day they might not return.
The illustration is from the book Norse Gods.
