Odin is the oldest and highest of all the Norse gods, often called the Allfather. He is the god of magic, deception, and warfare, and at the same time the divine source of poetry, knowledge, sacrifice, and ecstatic states.

To learn the mystery of the runes, he hung from a branch of the world tree Yggdrasil for nine nights, pierced by his own spear, sacrificing himself to himself. To gain wisdom, he traded one of his eyes to Mimir in exchange for a drink from the spring of wisdom.

Odin owns the eight-legged stallion Sleipnir, two wolves named Geri and Freki, two ravens, Huginn and Muninn, and the spear Gungnir, which never misses its mark.

The illustration is from the book Norse Gods.
