Saint George

Saint George is arguably the most popular dragon slayer of all time — the archetype of the noble knight on a white steed who rescues a princess and defeats evil in its most gruesome reptilian form.

The legend takes place outside the city of Silene in Libya, where a fire-breathing dragon had been terrorising the townspeople, who fed it sheep and finally their own children to keep it appeased. When the lot fell on the king’s daughter, George happened to be riding past, drove his lance into the beast’s mouth, and led it back to the city on a leash. He killed it on the condition that the townspeople convert to Christianity.

Saint George is the patron saint of England, Portugal, Catalonia, Lithuania, Serbia, Montenegro, Ethiopia, and Georgia — often thought to be named after him.
